Virginia Commonwealth University intends to replace the vacant spot that held a Chili's Grill & Bar, Starbucks and AVO Kitchen on campus with a catering and event space.
The university intends to renovate the spot, at the southeast corner of West Cary and South Belvidere streets, for nearly $9 million. The university's board of visitors would need to approve the plan on Friday.
Chili's and Starbucks opened on the ground floor of the Cary & Belvidere dormitory shortly after the facility finished construction in 2008. The AVO Kitchen spot was originally called Cary Street Market and Deli. The restaurants closed last spring.
The 18,000-square-foot space is set to become a catering kitchen with an event room. Through VCU's catering operation, students and others can order buffet meals, chicken wings and tacos in large portions. The operation has outgrown its current space in the Shafer Court Dining Center on Cathedral Place, the university said.

The new spot would allow its employees to improve efficiency and enhance service. The move also frees up space in Shafer Court for more dining options.
Foot traffic at Cary and Belvidere has not been strong enough to support another retail dining operation, the university said. In recent years, new dining locations and dormitories have opened on West Grace Street, on the other side of campus.
VCU intends to pay for the renovation using auxiliary funds from the university's dining department.
