N.J. wrestling power pauses practicing, competing 'out of abundance of caution'

Phillipsburg's wrestling team has paused competing and practicing "out of an abundance of caution."

The decision was made after an appearance at the Robin Leff Tournament at Southern last week. Phillipsburg came into contact there with a wrestler who had "skin issues."

Phillipsburg's choice to pause competing and practicing was first reported by TapInto Phillipsburg. Phillipsburg coach Tim Longacre confirmed that the Stateliners will be out of action until Dec. 26 when reached on Thursday.

"We have recently come into contact with other wrestlers with skin issues," Longacre said in a statement to TapInto. "Out of an abundance of caution we have decided to shut down for the entire incubation period. This is for the health and safety of our athletes that we may come in contact with. Once we know we are good we will resume practices and competitions."

Phillipsburg, No. 18 in the NJ.com Top 20, was set to host a tri-meet with No. 9 Mount Olive and Middletown North on Saturday. That has been cancelled. Middletown North Athletic Director Rich Carroll confirmed the cancellation.

"The Phillipsburg Wrestling Program continues to work closely with Phillipsburg School District athletic trainers and team physicians to ensure a safe and healthy competitive environment for our student-athletes and all opposing participants," Phillipsburg Athletic Director Kyle Fleming said in a statement.

Phillipsburg will resume competition at the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic, starting on Dec. 28.
