Scots are being told to prepare for a dramatic plunge in temperatures over the coming days as winter bites.

After a relatively mild and calm November, the weather has turned dramatically this week with heavy rain sweeping across the country.

Nineteen areas of Scotland have been placed under a yellow weather warning on Tuesday, November 11 with up to 6cm predicted to fall in certain parts.

Unsettled condition are set to continue before cold air arrives from the Arctic ahead of the weekend, sending the mercury towards freezing.

The Met Office predicts a north/south UK split in the coming days, with milder air in the south. However, it states it will be wetter there as well, with northern parts of Britain, including Scotland, seeing more settled, if chillier conditions.

Snow is forecast across higher ground over the weekend, with the Met Office stating: "By the weekend, the north of the UK will be firmly under the cooler airmass, with overnight frosts in places, and while there will still be some showers around, it'll generally be a much drier and brighter spell of weather here.

"Further south, the weekend will start off largely cloudy and wet, and still mild in the far south, but gradually the rain will ease and eventually clear to the south, with the drier, colder conditions further north likely affecting all parts by the end of the weekend."

Moving into next week, at least one forecaster is suggesting a widespread snow event that will blanket large swathes of the country, including Glasgow.

Models from WXCharts suggest Edinburgh may also be impacted as a wall of snow measuring almost 500 miles in length stretches all the way from the southwest to Shetland.

It will develop on Tuesday, November 18 across the Highlands before spreading further south. It will peak in the early hours of Wednesday, November 19, and up to 5cm could lie even at lower levels, according to the models.

The Met Office's long-range forecast also hints at snow next week, stating: "It is most likely that the bulk of the UK will experience drier and colder conditions into the first part of next week.

"Later in the period there is increasing uncertainty, but a trend towards more changeable conditions is possible, with some rain or showers in places, and perhaps some hill snow at times in the north."
