Brewers lose rookie pitcher to free agency after elbow surgery: report

The Milwaukee Brewers surprised a lot of people this season as they surged to the top of the standings during the regular season. Milwaukee won the National League Central and finished the season with the best record in baseball.

The Brewers surged into the postseason and took a series from the Chicago Cubs before being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

With the offseason beginning, the Brewers have some big decisions to make. They could look to trade their ace, Freddy Peralta, among other big moves. But before the Brewers could cut ties with anybody, one of their pitchers cut ties with them.

According to MLB's Adam McCalvy, Brewers pitcher Connor Thomas has cleared waivers and elected free agency this offseason. He was a Rule 5 pick for the Brewers last year, but made only two big league appearances with Milwaukee. Thomas allowed 12 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings this year.

The lefty underwent a UCL repair surgery and is expected to be sidelined until mid to late 2026.

Thomas has a very murky future in professional baseball. His short stint with the Brewers was basically as bad as it could get. Now he's coming off a major elbow surgery and could miss all of next season if the recovery doesn't go well.
