What to know about the top Week 8 high school football games in the Baton Rouge area

Heading into Week 8 of the regular season, teams are jockeying for better positions in the district standings and power ratings.

Here's what to know about five big games with district standing implications.

Zachary at Woodlawn

The Broncos will look to get back on track this week after a 52-31 loss to Liberty at home. Zachary (5-1, 1-1) was the lone unbeaten team in District 4-5A before the loss, but now finds itself behind Catholic (5-2, 2-0) in the district title race.

The Panthers (4-3, 1-1) will try to build on their 45-15 win against Scotlandville. Woodlawn has failed to find consistency, with all three of their losses coming by double figures.

Prairieville at Denham Springs

The Yellow Jackets' high-flying offense will be tested against a Prairieville side on the rise.

Denham Springs (5-2, 2-1) was 2-2 at the midway point of the season, but has since won three straight. Behind quarterback Da'Jean Golmond and running back Brenton Paul, the offense has averaged 48.7 points per game through the last three weeks.

The Hurricanes (4-3, 3-1) have pieced together one of the more impressive turnarounds this year after a 2-8 finish in year one of the program's existence. Prairieville has won its last three and is tied for first in District 5-5A.

A win could hold the team's chance at a district title, with the Hurricanes having already won the head-to-head game with East Ascension (5-2, 3-1).

Ascension Catholic at North Iberville

A battle of the top two teams in District 8-1A will take place Friday night at North Iberville when the Bears host the Bulldogs.

North Iberville (7-0, 2-0) has yet to lose a game, but will have their record tested against Ascension Catholic.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 2-0) are the defending district champs and ran all over St. John last week after senior Trevin Simon had a school-record 519 rushing yards. He is toward the top of the state with 1,879 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.

The Bears' defense is only allowing 20.4 points per game, but they will have their hands full against an Ascension Catholic side scoring 37.7 points per game.

East Feliciana at Dunham

Few teams have been able to slow down Dunham on its path toward a District 8-2A title. The Tigers (6-1, 3-0) and star quarterback Elijah Haven are lighting up defenses each week.

Dunham is scoring 47.9 points per game and has only scored less than 40 points in a game once in its 27-21 loss to Lake Charles.

The team challenging them this week is East Feliciana (5-2, 3-0). The Tigers fell to Donaldsonville, 20-6, last week, but remain unblemished in district play.

It will likely be up to East Feliciana's offense to keep up with Dunham. That unit has scored at least 30 points in three games this year.

Central at Liberty

The Patriots are coming off an impressive 52-31 victory over Zachary to move to 4-3, 1-1. The win ends a skid where Liberty lost three of its last four games.

Liberty put up 672 yards of offense in the win. QB Brice Preston had four rushing touchdowns and 133 rushing yards on nine attempts. He also threw two touchdowns.

Receiver Conner Nairn had five catches for 147 yards and caught both scores. Running back Zaiden Foster ran for 335 yards on 35 attempts and one touchdown.

The Patriots face Central (5-2, 1-1), who fell to Catholic 57-28 last week. The Wildcats are averaging 36.4 points per game, but the defense is allowing 33.1 points per game. This matchup could offer plenty of fireworks.
