Memories of a chat show host and Hampshire pop superstar

Hampshire's 60s pop idol Heinz Burt starred in a chat show hosted by broadcast legend John Stapleton who died recently aged 79.

The veteran journalist, who had Parkinson's Disease, passed away after his condition was complicated by pneumonia. He fronted an audience participation programme, The Time... The Place which ran from 1987 and 1998 and was recorded at the TVS studios - forerunner to Meridian ITV - at Northam, Southampton.

Heinz, who grew up in Eastleigh before tasting global stardom as the bass player with The Tornados, was in the front row of the audience with fellow pop star Gary Numan discussing what made fans of the famous so fanatical.

With The Tornados, Heinz soared to number one in the early 60s with Telstar, a multi million selling instrumental tribute to the first iconic communications satellite. They were the first British band to top the American charts.

Heinz died in 2000 aged 57 following a stroke after a brave battle against Motor Neurone Disease. His guest spot on The Time The Place came four months after The Tornados' emotional final reunion at Lewisham celebrating the life and work of their manager and maverick record producer Joe Meek.

In his introduction to Heinz, Stapleton said: "In his heyday he was swamped by fans, some of whom are with him today."

Heinz, who also had a big hit with Just Like Eddie when he broke away from The Tornados to become a solo singer, spoke of how the adulation from the fans was pleasant but got out of hand.

As the programme unfolded Heinz got into his stride and showed he still had a razor sharp wit for live performances.

His engaging personality shone through. In fact he went down so well that he got a letter of thanks from the show's producer Tom Atkinson who wrote: "It was a great pleasure to meet you. The show went very well - a lively and interesting discussion on a fascinating subject, helped considerably by your contribution."

Heinz was sent a script and VHS of the programme which became a prized part of his collection.
