Hundreds gather in Barry for Remembrance Day events

Hundreds of residents came out in support of a number of Remembrance Day parades and events over the weekend.

Ahead of Remembrance Sunday, Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery hosted its annual wreath and cross laying service on Friday, November 7.

Around 200 schoolchildren from across Barry took part in the event, laying crosses to commemorate those who lost their lives defending our country.

Organised by the Barry Royal British Legion, this service provides the town's young people with the opportunity to remember those who have lost their lives to war.

Pupils from St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School read their own heartfelt prayers, as part of the service.

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies laid a wreath alongside other elected members.

He said: "It was a privilege to attend the event, which was an exceptionally poignant way to mark Remembrance.

"Many of the veterans I spoke to rightly emphasised the importance of ensuring future generations appreciate the sacrifices of those who came before us.

"Involving local schools in commemorations is particularly important in this regard, and I pay tribute to the Royal British Legion for their work organising the event.

"Many of the children also gave readings as part of the service, and they were a credit to themselves and their schools.

"I'd like to thank Barry Royal British Legion for the kind invitation."

On Sunday, November 9, hundreds joined the Remembrance Sunday parade in Barry town centre and attended a service at the cenotaph to remember the town's fallen, who lost their lives to conflict.

Many of Barry's uniformed organisations and volunteer groups were represented on the day, showing their respects.

Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Leaders from St Athan and Rhoose took part in the Remembrance Sunday service and represented Girlguiding Vale of Glamorgan with "such pride".

Members of these groups have also been busy over the last few weeks selling poppies to support the Royal British Legion.

5th Barry Sea Scouts thank their youth members, leaders and families for attending the parade, saying it was "heartwarming to see Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout sections represented."
