Pandava king Yudhishthira wanted to know the significance of observing a vrat on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Margashirsha month, Krishna Paksha. Hence, Lord Krishna narrated the story of Goddess Ekadashi, who came into being on this day.Lord Krishna explained that there lived a demon named Mura in the Satyuga. He wreaked havoc in the three worlds: Swarga Loka, Prithvi Loka and Patala Loka. One day, he grew so powerful that his existence proved to be a threat to the universe. Therefore, the Devas asked Lord Vishnu to end Mura's tyranny. And in the battle, both Mura and Lord Vishnu invested all their powers. Subsequently, during the middle of the battle, Lord Vishnu headed to Badrikashram to take rest. Mura chased Lord Vishnu and attempted to attack him while he was asleep.
