A 4.6 magnitude earthquake hits the southern side of Kilauea - ExBulletin

The star on a U.S. Geological Survey map shows the approximate epicenter of a 4.6 magnitude earthquake on Hawaii Island late Tuesday night.

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck the south side of Kilauea volcano just before midnight Tuesday.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the moderate quake occurred at 11:49 p.m. and was centered about 9 miles southeast of Fern Forest at a depth of 3 miles below sea level.

The quake did not trigger a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu.

"The earthquake had no apparent impact on the Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes," the scientists said in a USGS news release. "The event followed the end of Episode 37 of the lava fountain on Kilauea by 10 minutes, but does not appear to be directly related to the eruption."

They said that most of the earthquakes in this area are caused by the movement of the southern side of Kilauea.

Geologists at the Croatian Defense Council said no damage to buildings or infrastructure was expected based on the severity of the quake.
