Some in the MMA community have played the role of body language expert to assess Dricus du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev's final face-off.
It has been a largely respectful and drama-free UFC 319 fight week in Chicago, as MMA's leading promotion hosts action in the 'Windy City' on Saturday night for the first time since before the pandemic.
Tasked with closing out proceedings at United Center is one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year, which will see Khamzat Chimaev challenge Dricus du Plessis for the middleweight title in a clash between two stars who are yet to taste defeat in the UFC.
Chimaev ran into Du Plessis during fight week, with cameras catching their well-mannered encounter. But things played out much differently when they stood face-to-face at Friday's ceremonial weigh-ins.
After an intense staredown at Thursday's press conference, the two UFC 319 headliners returned to the stage for one last opportunity to make a statement of intent to the fans and their opponent.
They certainly looked to do that, as Chimaev and Du Plessis' face-off immediately got physical, sparking an intervention from a panicked UFC CEO Dana White and the promotion's security team.
The weigh-ins concluded with both men's final remarks, during which the South African vowed to win the booing Chicago masses over with his performance and his Chechen opponent promising to leave the champion "dead" at UFC 319.
The aggressive face-off between Du Plessis and Chimaev resulted in plenty of reactions on social media, with many "body language experts" in the MMA fanbase giving their late predictions for the fight based on what they saw from the pair on stage.
Many liked what they saw from a hyped-up Chimaev at the ceremonial weigh-ins and will be in the Chechen challenger's corner on fight night.
"I see Chimaev gathering the energy of the crowd to have a mental edge."
"Khamzat is hungry for it."
"Dricus is frozen, not sure what to feel, won't know what hit him in the first round."
Others, though, saw the edge being on the side of the champ following the heated altercation.
"Whoever puts their hands on first during weigh ins ends up losing most of the time."
"Khamzat rattled."
"DDP is going to knock him out. DDP is solid, not jumpy. Khamzat is."
"DDP via proving he's the better fighter after a good battle with the absolute warrior that is Khamzat."
"You all saying Khamzat winning will be surprised at what Dricus will do."
But not everyone took anything meaningful away from the face-off on either side.
"Is this a real staredown or just two dudes trying to convince themselves they're not nervous?"
"Acting, but a lot better than the WWE. Feels like an episode of Real Housewives."
