A raccoon that was killed by a dog in a New Jersey park has tested positive for rabies, according to officials.
The Burlington County Health Department shared in a new release that on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, a raccoon was killed by a dog near the small dog run area at Pennington Park in Delanco and then dragged through the fence into the dog run.
After the remains were secured, officials said the raccoon had tested positive for rabies, a fatal viral disease that affects the brain.
Officials said that the dog that killed the raccoon was vaccinated and has received a rabies booster. In addition, the dog's owners are also receiving rabies post-exposure treatment as a precaution.
At this time, the health department shared they are not aware of any other humans or pets exposed to the raccoon.
However, as a precaution, officials said the small dog run area at Pennington Park will remain closed until Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025.
"Any person who has been scratched or bitten by a raccoon at Pennington Park in the last two weeks should seek medical guidance from their primary care doctor or another physician. They should also notify the Health Department at 609-265-5548," health officials said. "Park visitors who brought dogs to the park during the last two weeks should also notify the Health Department if they believe their dog came in contact with a raccoon, and contact their family veterinarian for additional guidance."
Health officials urge residents to make sure their pets are up to date with their rabies vaccines and keep a safe distance away from any stray animals or wildlife.
