LAPLACE, La. (WGNO) -- A passenger is dead and two drivers are injured following a crash that happened in the LaPlace area on Friday night, Dec. 6.
According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers with Troop B began investigating the crash, which happened on Interstate 10 near milepost 211 on the Bonnet Carré Spillway bridge, around 9 p.m.
The initial investigation showed that, for reasons that aren't currently known, a 2012 Mazda 6 was stopped in the left lane with its lights on, when a 2017 Nissan Sentra was simultaneously approaching the Mazda from behind, hitting the car and pushing it forward into its driver, who was standing in front of the vehicle near its bumper.
As a result of being hit, the driver was reportedly thrown into the marsh below the bridge. The Mazda's front seat passenger, identified as 22-year-old Curtis Collins, of Baton Rouge, wasn't restrained and died on scene.
Both the driver of the Nissan, who was properly restrained, and the driver of the Mazda sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken from the drivers for analysis in the ongoing investigation.
