BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Former Louisiana House Speaker Joe R. Saleter has died at the age of 82.
Salter, who represented Sabine Parish's District from 1986 until 2008, served as Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2004 to 2008. Before his political career, he worked as an educator, principal, and assistant superintendent in Sabine Parish.
In recognition of his impact, Salter was inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame.
Secretary of State Nancy Landry announced Salter's passing on Saturday, August 16, in a Facebook post.
Salter is survived by his wife, Bettye, their two children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
