NC adds 80 DMV employees to help with backlog - WCCB Charlotte's CW

RALEIGH, NC -- Ciera Seymour moved to North Carolina a few months ago. She needs her Real ID like 48% of North Carolinians.

"As soon as I walked in there, they kind of just declined me," Seymour said of walking into a Charlotte DMV.

On Friday, Governor Josh Stein and DMV Commissioner Paul Tine acknowledged what they call the DMV crisis.

Tine said DMVs around the state see 3,900 people wait in line per day and additional 2,000 appointments.

"If you don't need to be here, don't don't come right now. Let us get some of this through. If you have a passport or if you're not going to fly, or if you don't need to be in one of the federal building, then you don't need it today," said Tine.

To put a dent in the backlog, the state added 80 new driver license examiners dispersed throughout North Carolina.

Starting this weekend, 8AM-Noon walk-in hours will be available in 20 locations around the state. Including five in our viewing area.

Governor Stein's 2025-2027 budget proposal includes funding for 61 new Driver License Examiners and 24 new positions to staff new and expanded Driver License Offices.
