Sony Faces an unfixable PS5 vulnerability as BootROM keys are dumped and shared publicly

A leaked set of PlayStation 5 BootROM keys, published online at the end of 2025, has exposed core hardware-level security secrets that researchers say Sony cannot simply patch on existing consoles. While the breach does not enable an immediate jailbreak, experts warn it significantly lowers the bar for future exploits, potentially paving the way for permanent hacks, homebrew software, and widespread piracy risks.

Right as 2026 kicked off, a significant security breach occurred when the PlayStation 5's ROM keys were leaked online, potentially enabling modders and hackers to jailbreak Sony's console down the line.

According to the Cyber Sec Guru, PlayStation 5 ROM keys are essentially hardware codes stored in the PS5's processor. These keys were publicly dumped online on 31 December, 2025 and quickly spread around numerous forums and wikis.

For your average gamer, this doesn't equate to a PS5 jailbreak overnight, but for the more tech-savvy individuals who like to poke around the deeper layers of Sony's hardware and software, it could make things much more straightforward.

The leak in question involves BootROM codes. In layman's terms, they're the first line of defense when you turn on your PS5. These codes essentially verify that the bootloader is legit and hasn't been tampered with.
