Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) commissioned a new generator at its Rock Sound, Eleuthera power plant yesterday, stating that it will bring relief to residents fed by that station, the power company said in a statement released following the commissioning.
BPL noted that the new generator came online less than one week since BPL held a town hall meeting in South Eleuthera to assure its customers that the issues of unreliable generation were being addressed.
Southern Regional Manager Pedro Marcello said the generator at the Rock Sound Power Plant (RSPP)will provide the island with much more stability, while a green energy and natural gas energy generation facility is being constructed in Hatchet Bay.
"This generator will provide more reliable power by reducing the demand on the Hatchet Bay Power Station, helping to minimize the frequency of outages," said Marcello.
"Our goal is to have RSPP energize all of South Eleuthera, allowing the Hatchet Bay Power Station to power the North."
The statement adds: "In addition to the new generator at RSPP, residents are also benefiting from the recent commissioning of the Tarpum Bay Substation.
"This modern facility strengthens the island's transmission and distribution network, ensuring that electricity can be delivered more efficiently and reliably across South Eleuthera."
According to Marcelo, the substation plays a role by reducing strain on the entire system, giving the island much more stable power than it had without it.
He added that the substation also lays the foundation for the long-term improvements in power supply that are ahead for the island.
EA Energy is developing a solar plant and liquefied natural gas plant for Eleuthera, and has begun pre-construction work.
BPL said the commissioning of the new generator yesterday in Rock Sound, and the addition of the Tarpum Bay Substation, are progressive steps "toward greater energy security for Eleuthera".
"While additional long-term projects remain underway, these immediate investments demonstrate BPL's commitment to delivering reliable power, supporting economic growth, and improving the quality of life for residents and businesses across the island," the statement said.
"BPL assures consumers in Eleuthera that their voices have been heard, and these efforts mark the beginning of a stronger, more stable energy future."
