An Anglesey chippy has been named among the best in Wales and has a chance of tilting for the UK title. Finney's in Benllech is one of four Welsh takeaways on the shortlist for the 2026 National Fish & Chip Awards (NF&CA).
Enjoying a nice big portion of fish and chips has been a cornerstone of British culture since the 19th century. As well as focusing on sustainability, Finney's has continued to get its batter just right - in recent years the shop has won a succession of awards.
Earlier this year it collected the NF&CA's UK title for sustainability, having not for the first time been shortlisted for the organisation's all-Wales title. Online, the chippy said: "Here's hoping this is the year we bring home the top spot!"
Its rivals this time are all from South Wales - O' My Cod, Bridgend; Zero Plus Fish & Chips, Cardiff; and Dolphin Fish and Chips, Fishguard. The one to beat is current UK champions Yarm Road Fish & Chips in Darlington, County Durham.
Finney's - run by Mike and Carol Hulme - has been trading since 2009. Demonstrating its commitment to the environment, the business has phased out all single-use plastics and has introduced a popular cash back scheme for customers who reuse old bags for their purchases. It also insists the fish it serves is responsibly caught.
Like all chippies, it's being hit by huge price increases, from cod to sunflower oil. Potato shortages are another challenge in a year of record heat. Sign up now for the latest news on the North Wales Live Whatsapp community
But Finney's keeps going and it has attracted top ratings from customers - some even claiming to make two-hour round trips for their favourite comfort food. On hearing the news it had again been shortlisted, the shop said: "A massive thank you to our wonderful customers for your continued support, and to our dedicated team for their hard work and passion - we couldn't have done it without you."
Awards will be handed out across 14 categories including best newcomer and outstanding contribution to the industry. However the most coveted accolade is takeaway of the year.
The UK shortlist spans will eventually be whittled down to 20, and then 10, before the winners are unveiled at a ceremony in London in February. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
