Chesterfield County is warning the public about fraudulent emails claiming to be from the Chesterfield Planning Commission.
Emails sent from "planning.chesterfield.gov@usa.com" referenced a "conditional use approval fee."
Chesterfield officials said those emails did not come from the county nor the planning commission, adding that all official county emails should end with "@chesterfield.gov."
In the statement, the county said similar scams have hit other localities in recent months.
The emails include information from publicly available zoning documents, making them appear official.
The county said it will never send emails asking for payment via wire transfer, credit card or Automated Clearing House (ACH) and that those emails should be disregarded.
