After 32 Powerball drawings without any jackpot winners, the prize is the largest its been in over a year.
The Powerball jackpot for the Aug. 16 drawing is an estimated $565 million. The cash option on the prize is an estimated $258.8 million.
The last time a jackpot prize was won was on May 31. A ticket sold in California won the buyer a $204.5 million jackpot.
The last time there was a jackpot bigger than the one that could be won on Saturday was on April 6, 2024. A ticket sold in Oregon won the buyer a $1.32 billion jackpot.
However, Massachusetts residents have won smaller prizes recently.
A Powerball ticket worth $100,000 was sold at the Nouria location on Washington Street in Duxbury earlier this month. And a Powerball ticket worth $50,000 was sold at J & D Convenience on West Central Street in Natick.
In Powerball, players select five numbers between 1 and 69 and one Powerball number between 1 and 26 for $2. They then choose how many drawings they want to use those numbers for.
Players that match all five numbers and the Powerball number win the jackpot. They have 1 in 292,201,338 chances of winning this way.
Players that match four numbers and the Powerball number win $50,000. They have 1 in 913,129.18 chances of winning this way. Players that win this way while using the PowerPlay option once double their prize money to $100,000.
Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
