Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of ignoring the problems faced by farmers, saying they created such a mess that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) still has to do much more work to rectify their missteps.
Addressing a public rally after the inauguration of a urea plant at the Assam Valley Fertiliser & Chemical Company Ltd in Namrup, Modi congratulated the people of Assam after performing the 'Bhoomi pujan' of the Ammonia-Urea project, saying, "Today is a big day for Assam and the entire North-East. The dream that Namrup and Dibrugarh had been waiting for a long time is being fulfilled today. A new chapter of industrial progress is about to begin in this whole area."
He announced a range of schemes for the welfare of farmers, saying that the BJP's 'double-engine' government is very sensitive to their needs. "In the development of Viksit Bharat, farmers will play a crucial role. With their interests in mind, our government is working tirelessly to support them," he added.
"Among various agricultural welfare initiatives, it is essential to ensure a continuous supply of fertiliser to our farmers. This urea factory will fulfil that need. Approximately Rs 11,000 crore will be invested in this facility, which will produce 12 lakh metric tonnes of fertiliser annually. Once production begins here, the supply chain will become more efficient and logistics costs will be significantly reduced," he said.
