WARREN -- Stephen Svecz, a beloved bibliophile, film enthusiast, world traveler and lifelong seeker of knowledge, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2024.
Born July 3, 1957, in Salem, New Jersey, Steve lived a life filled with intellectual curiosity, adventure and profound contributions to his community.
A graduate of Hiram College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and philosophy, Stephen later earned his master's degree in library science from Kent State University. His career spanned 38 years at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, where he became a cornerstone of the institution.
Steve was a rare book expert and Mobile Library service manager delivering books and library materials to the homebound. He coordinated the Books for the Blind program and was an exemplary reference librarian where his enthusiasm for books, reading and broad knowledge of many subjects had an immeasurable impact on library patrons and the community. Among his many achievements, Steve unearthed a rare incunabulum from 1478, a discovery that reflected his deep respect for history and the written word.
His love of learning extended to leading a variety of book and film discussion groups, organizing the Monday Movies series and helping coordinate the Charlie Chaplin Film Festival and Warren's Kenneth Patchen Literary Festival.
Steve had a boundless passion for cinema, from foreign films and Japanese animation to the shadowy intrigue of film noir. He frequented film festivals in Cleveland and Toronto. Adding to his broad range of interests, Steve became an avid fan of English Premier League Soccer. A lover of trivia, Steve was unbeatable in any contest, his mind a treasure trove of knowledge.
An adventurer at heart, Steve traveled the globe with his wife, Rhonda, visiting the Galápagos Islands, Machu Picchu in Peru, Prague, Iceland and Cuba. He also explored countless cities and towns across the United States, delighted in finding the smallest museums, unique architecture and fascinating local facts.
He visited Yellowstone, counted Alpine marmots in Lyon, France, with Earthwatch and treasured the experiences of some awe-inspiring, total and annular eclipses.
Steve's interests were as eclectic as they were enduring. He collected obscure movie memorabilia, countless rare books, unique and rare toys and charming artifacts from his extensive travels. Steve admired the works of H.P. Lovecraft and other fantasy/science fiction works and delighted in Sherlock Holmes mysteries, including attending events presented by the Baker Street Irregulars. He delightedly attended several Comic Cons and other literary conventions, including Necronomicon.
Known for his humility, warmth and countless interests, Steve had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His boundless knowledge, insatiable curiosity and approachability, left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Steve was also a loving pet parent who cherished his kitties and bunnies throughout the years, rescuing many with comforting arms.
Stephen was predeceased by his mother, Rae B. Svecz, and his father, Andrew John Svecz.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Rhonda; four siblings, Andrea Rickerson (Morty), Michael Svecz (Patricia), Christopher Svecz (Terrisa) and Susan Waddington (Michael); his mother-in-law Lorraine Marr; brother-in-law, Gary Marr (Robin); sister-in-law, Becky Zanath (Ron); his four nieces and seven nephews; his extended family; countless friends; and the community he so deeply enriched.
Stephen's life was a celebration of intellect, creativity and the simple joys of discovery.
In his memory, let us continue to seek knowledge, share stories and treasure the beauty in life's smallest details.
Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Stephen during memorial calling hours 10 a.m. to noon, with a funeral service to follow at noon Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel of Warren, 1884 North Road NE.
Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Library of America; the Film Noir Foundation; the House Rabbit Society; the TNR of Warren; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
