Acute care across the province is feeling the strain, with flu and other respiratory diseases contributing to overflowing waiting rooms, said Dr. Paul Parks.
"It's been a major impact, a gong show to be honest, and we're just seeing the start of it -- it's already overwhelming our emergency departments," said Parks, an emergency physician at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
"The peak's not going to come for another four to six weeks."
He said at one point last Friday, there were 109 people in the waiting room of the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, which normally handles 50 -- "and in Calgary they're getting hit the same."
