Amazons Under-16s cut down NW Roses on Fleetwood trip

Bolton RUFC Amazons Girls Under-16s travelled to Fleetwood on Sunday to play the NW Roses and came away with a thumping 50-0 victory.

The NW Roses are a relatively new team playing their first game of the season. They are a cluster team involving Fylde, Preston, Southport, Fleetwood, Southport and Burnley girls - some of which are new to the game.

It will take them a few weeks to gel as a team and it showed as Bolton proved too strong.

From the start, the ball was passed to the right edge and Bolton were in the opposition '22' and after further pressure Holly Turner went over for the first try of two by her on five minutes.

Bolton continued to have the majority of the possession and with extra scrummaging practice in training recently, their scrums were much improved with Isabel McNaboe. and Bridget Stone at second row strengthening the scrum. Scarlett Doak also stepped in for the missing Erin Shaw, who was ill, and she bolstered the front row. This and her open play earned her the Captain's Player-of-the-Match award which she fully deserved.

Bolton continued their dominance with a try more or less every five minutes - with five tries in the first half before it was cut short due to an injury to Roses player, Saffia.

Tries by Amelia Crook, Aisha Abdi (two) and Betty Weall, one of which was converted by Iona Barnes, ended the first half with the Amazons 32-0 in front.

After a short delay for the injury, the game resumed for the second half and it was very much a similar gameto the first.

The NW Roses' heads never dropped and they were unfortunate not to score in the second half after a good period of sustained pressure.

However, Bolton continued to dominate with Eilidh Burns at scrum-half controlling the rucks and making some great breaks.

There were further tries on the left-hand side - one for Charlotte Stone, who after a break down the left was fed by Holly and scored her first try for the team.

More tries went to Amelia, Betty and Aisha got her hat-trick before Iona and finally Holly, Iona converting two and Isabel one.

Moment of the match went to Iona, who meant to kick for touch after a penalty and the ball did not go out but rolled over the touch line where she followed up to dot the ball down and score.

It ended 50-0 with the Players' Player honour going to Amelia after some excellent carries.

Captain's player went to Scarlett for excellent open play and scrummaging, while coaches' player went to Felicity Redford for her close-quarter carries and scrummaging.

The coaches' opposition award went to Saffia from the NW Roses who, prior to injury, was the best player on the team and all being well, she will have a speedy recovery.

Amazons are at home next Sunday when they host Rochdale at Avenue Street (11am).
