Val Kilmer's daughter pays tribute to late dad on his birthday

Val Kilmer's daughter Mercedes remembered her late dad on what would have been his 66th birthday.

In a touching post to Instagram on December 31, the actress and singer shared 20 photos of the Top Gun star - who died of pneumonia on April 1 last year after a long battle with throat cancer.

The images showed the actor at various stages of his life from child to actor on film sets.

'My dad would have been 66 today, born on the last day of the fifties,' she wrote alongside the photo montage and heart emoji, adding: 'so grateful to all my friends for getting me through 2025.'

Mercedes shared photos of a young Kilmer clutching a baseball mitt, Kilmer in an early grade school picture, and another one of him riding a horse when he was a youngster.

The slideshow featured snaps of Kilmer with Mercedes' mother, English actress Joanne Whalley, 64, to whom he was married from 1988 to 1996 - and who was seen comforting Mercedes the day after the actor's death.

Mercedes shared what looked like a photo taken on Kilmer and Whalley's 1988 wedding, plus a snap of Kilmer hugging Mercedes and brother Jack, now 30, when they were little.

There were images of Kilmer in character for his films including Top Gun, The Doors and Willow, the film that sparked his romance with Whalley.

Kilmer's daughter also dropped in a photo of her dad in dramatic form in one of his stage performances.

Mercedes previously expressed how close their relationship was and how much she loved being around him.

'My dad is such a smart and creative person that I love hanging out with, even if he wasn't my dad, too,' she told People in 2020.

That was the year they played a father-daughter duo in the movie Paydirt, three years after Kilmer revealed he had been diagnosed with throat cancer.

Kilmer - whose voice was left permanently altered following a tracheotomy - played a sheriff who had a speech impediment in the crime thriller.

'My dad is so talented, and he's able to artfully circumvent the limitations of his speech,' Mercedes told the publication. 'I learned so much watching him, like how he communicated physically. It expanded what I thought acting was.'

Kilmer was equally gushing of both his kids, telling People: 'I am just madly, wildly entertained by them. My only gripe is that I never see them enough, so I never get enough of the wild entertainment that everyone else gets, but they're really, really, entertaining.'

While speaking of her father's health health struggles, Mercedes tried to remain optimistic.

'We all spend so much time together,' she told the outlet.

'Even just getting to meet all my dad's friends from before I was born -- there are so many beautiful things that happen when you need help from people.'

Kilmer reported in 2020 that he had been cancer-free for four years.

In the Amazon Prime documentary entitled Val, Kilmer spoke candidly about living with the consequences of throat cancer including having to use an electric device called a voice box on the artificial hole in his throat to talk.

'I obviously am sounding much worse than I feel. I can't speak without plugging this hole [in his throat],' he said.

Kilmer's final movie role was in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, in which he reprised his role as Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise's Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.
