The English football tradition of playing through the Christmas period is a long renowned and welcomed facet for domestic - and now overseas - football fans.

Stuffed full of Christmas leftovers, supporters often take to the motorway to go and watch their team do battle on Boxing Day, albeit this year it is slightly different, with only one Premier League match scheduled for the 26th.

In fact, Leeds United don't play until Sunday, giving them a very rare six-day gameless period over Christmas week. There is one former tradition that players might be thankful is no longer present in the modern age.

Up until 1959, players would pull on their boots and play a game on Christmas Day itself - and there were usually tremendous turnouts. Leeds were no different, with around 25,000 watching the Whites play out a goalless draw with Fulham at Elland Road in 1920.

In those days, teams often played each other twice within a few days, and 30,000 saw Fulham defeat Leeds 1-0 in London 48 hours after that Christmas stalemate.

Ties were usually kept between rivals in nearby regions - but not always, as the Fulham clash exemplifies. In 1948 and 1950, Leeds travelled to West Ham for their Christmas Day meeting. On the flip side, Cardiff City had to make the journey to Leeds on the big day in 1928.

Between 1920 and 1956, Leeds played on Christmas Day some 20 times, with a pause between 1938 and 1945 due to the Second World War.

Their best result came via a 6-0 mauling of Aston Villa in 1924 - they would go on to lose the reverse fixture a few days later 2-1. United's worst result came in 1953, when Nottingham Forest ran out 5-2 winners on their home turf.

The final time Leeds played on Christmas Day was three years later in 1956. The great John Charles was on show in a 1-1 draw with Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

After the hosts opened the scoring in the 27th minute, attacker Harold Brook would rescue a point for Leeds with five minutes left on the clock to bring relief to manager Raich Carter. Just a day later, on Boxing Day, Leeds won the reverse fixture 5-0 with Charles bagging two goals.

But the hero of the afternoon was John Brooks, who sealed a festive hat-trick in front of 22,689 people at Elland Road. That was a fantastic late Christmas present.
