Major US retailer sues Trump administration over tariffs

Costco is suing the administration of President Donald Trump to ensure it is eligible for refunds if the Supreme Court strikes down Trump's tariff policies, according to Bloomberg.

Dozens of companies have filed lawsuits since October challenging Trump's use of emergency powers to impose the tariffs, according to Bloomberg. Costco is one of the biggest corporate players to jump into the fight so far.

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case challenging Trump's tariffs in November. Multiple justices asked skeptical questions, but the court has not said when it will rule, according to CNN.

With the lawsuit, Costco is attempting to make sure it will get refunds of tariff costs if the court rules against Trump. The suit did not say how much the tariffs have cost the company, according to Bloomberg.

Through the end of October, the federal government had collected $205 billion in tariffs. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said previously that the U.S. might have to refund half its tariff revenue if the court rules against the Trump administration.

In addition to Costco, companies including Revlon, Kawasaki and Yokohama Tire have filed lawsuits over the tariffs.

Trump has imposed tariffs on a wide range of goods and individual nations since returning to office in January. The administration has been using the taxes as leverage in negotiations on trade deals with other nations.

Some of Trump's tariffs early in the year set off downturns in financial markets, although stocks later recovered.

Trump has proposed using some of the revenue from his tariffs to provide $2,000 dividend checks to Americans. It's unclear if such a plan has enough support in Congress to pass.
