After his record-setting MLB debut, Trey Yesavage will return to the mound when the Toronto Blue Jays head to Kansas City for a weekend series against the Royals, manager John Schneider said Wednesday.
However, Schneider wouldn't commit to whether Yesavage will start or work out of the bullpen.
The Blue Jays haven't announced any of their starters for the series in Kansas City, leaving Yesavage in consideration to take the ball in one of the three games.
Yesavage, of course, lived up to the hype on Monday. Toronto's top prospect set a franchise record with nine strikeouts against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, working five innings of one-run ball while allowing just three hits.
Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt are scheduled to pitch for the Blue Jays in their final two games against the Rays, seemingly leaving Yesavage, Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber and José Berríos under consideration to pitch against the Royals.
Toronto's series in Kansas City will mark the end of a 13-game-in-13-days stretch for the club and its final road series of the season. After an off-day Monday, the Blue Jays will return home to Rogers Centre for a pair of three-game sets against the Boston Red Sox and Rays.
With the Red Sox appearing to be the only potential playoff team remaining on the Blue Jays' schedule -- barring a miracle run by the Royals or Rays -- it stands to reason the Toronto may want to hide Yesavage from Boston in case it matches up with its AL East rival in the post-season.
Yesavage was one of the most productive minor-league pitchers in baseball this season, posting a 3.12 ERA across all four full-season levels while racking up 160 strikeouts. Over his final seven appearances in the minors, Yesavge pitched in relief three times as the Blue Jays prepared him to work in multiple roles if he became an option at the major-league level down the stretch.
