Heightened security measures set at New Orleans zoo, aquarium and insectarium after attack

Aubudon Nature Institute announced increased security at the New Orleans aquarium, insectarium and zoo, effective Thursday, in the wake of the deadly attack on Bourbon Street.

The popular attractions will be open, the institute said in an email Wednesday night addressed to members and guests. However, bags will be inspected at the entrances, and clear bags are recommended for quicker entry.

Ice chests and coolers, normally allowed at the zoo, will not be permitted.

The facilities will not store suitcases or large bags while visitors tour the attractions.

Strollers and other mobility aids will be subject to search, the email said.

The aquarium and insectarium are located at 1 Canal Place, just six blocks from Canal and Bourbon streets, where a man driving a pickup truck early Wednesday plowed through a crowd in a suspected terror attack, killing 15 people and injuring more than 35 before he was killed by police.

The zoo is at 6500 Magazine St., Uptown.
