A SANDF soldier has died and another remains missing after a flooded river swept a military vehicle away during Operation Corona in the Macadamia area.
The incident happened on Thursday during a routine border patrol, placing the tragedy within South Africa's ongoing efforts to secure its borders.
The South African National Defence Force confirmed that members of the SANDF Military Police were travelling in a patrol vehicle when they attempted to cross a river swollen by heavy rain.
Strong currents overturned the crossing and carried two soldiers away.
Rescue teams later recovered the body of one soldier. Search efforts for the missing member continue. The operation involves the South African Police Service Diving Rescue Team, with air support from an SANDF Oryx helicopter.
Authorities say teams remain on site and are working against difficult water conditions.
In a statement, the SANDF said it is committed to finding the missing soldier as quickly as possible and is coordinating all available resources to support the search.
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga, along with senior defence leaders, has sent condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased soldier. Officials have also expressed support for the family of the missing member during the ongoing rescue mission.
The SANDF has asked the public and media to allow space for rescue teams to work and for families to receive updates with care and dignity.
