The EU and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are supporting Mauritania with €124.3 million for the development of the Nouakchott-Kiffa high-voltage transmission line. The package includes an EU grant of €34.3 million and an EIB loan of €90 million.
The grant agreement was signed on December 17 by Abdellah Souleymane Cheikh-Sidia, Minister of Economic Affairs and Development of Mauritania; Joaquin Tasso Vilallonga, EU Ambassador to Mauritania; and Adam Bruun, Regional Head of Representation, EIB. Financing will support construction of a 225 kV, 600 km overhead transmission line between Nouakchott and Kiffa and associated distribution substations.
"This project is one of the flagship actions of the Global Gateway strategy in Mauritania and supports shared priorities between the EU and Mauritania," Ambassador Vilallonga said.
Global Gateway is the EU's investment framework designed to mobilize public and private capital for energy, transport, and digital infrastructure between 2021 and 2027.
The project also includes extensions of substations along the corridor, a rural electrification component targeting communities along the route, and technical assistance to update environmental and social studies. The works are designed to strengthen transmission capacity and improve electricity distribution across central Mauritania.
