Newborn's survival unlikely due to "severity of infection", coroner finds

Baby Cora Coney died in October 2022 shortly after being delivered through caesarean section

A newborn baby who died at Craigavon Area Hospital after developing infections while in the womb would likely not have survived through earlier pre-birth intervention due to the "severity" of her illness, a corner has found.

Cora Coney, whose parents live in Dungannon, Co Tyrone died shortly after her caesarean section birth in October 2022, after having contracted pneumonia in her lungs, along with sepsis and group B streptococcus, while still in the womb.

The infant's birth was overdue by 12 days, and previous inquest hearings were told she was normally formed.

She stopped breathing after her oxygen levels fell when her umbilical chord was cut.

A paediatric pathologist had told an earlier hearing it was likely the infant's infections were "very well established" by the time of the birth.

Cora's mother, Greta Mikaityte, had been given antibiotics hours before the caesarean section took place.

At Wednesday's inquest findings hearing in Dungannon Courthouse, Corner Joe McCrisken said that even if antibiotics were administered earlier, or an earlier delivery had taken place, "because of the severity of infection" the outcome would not have changed.

"I hope that the inquest process has given you some answers," the coroner told Cora's parents.
