Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the ongoing final works on Sunday taking place at the Marsa horse racecourse ahead of its reopening in the coming days, the Office of the Prime Minister stated.
The OPM said that the racecourse is set to reopen for the horse racing championship, and added that the works were part of a project carried out as promised in the government's work programme, which it stated continues to strengthen sports infrastructure in Malta.
Accompanied by the Minister for Education and Sports Clifton Grima, Prime Minister Abela said that this particular sporting discipline is an important one for Malta. He said that international-level facilities have been created at the Marsa racecourse for the purpose of horse racing as well as training. Abela said that the economic strength of Malta allows for continued investment in different areas ranging from health, education, families, and the environment, as he spoke of plans for White Rocks and Manoel Island to be identified as national parks.
The OPM stated that the horse racing community has wanted a new quality track which could offer more events, professionalism, and peace of mind for the athletes. It said that the track was designed by Maltese Architect Edwin Mintoff under the guidance of Swedish architect Lars Sandstrom.
