Blackburn thug smashed windows and brutally beat his partner

A Blackburn thug who smashed the windows to his mother's house and also attacked his girlfriend, brutally beating her on the ground, has been jailed.

James McInerney, 40, of Park Lee Road, appeared before Preston Crown Court charged with one count of criminal damage, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of shoplifting.

The first offence took place on April 27, following a night out with his mother and girlfriend, when all three had been in high spirits.

They returned to his mother's house, which is when the defendant became aggressive towards his partner, something his mother wouldn't stand for.

McInerney was forced to leave the property by his brother, but tried to force his way back in by smashing the front window with a bottle and the back window with a rock.

Judge Richard Gioserano said: "The criminal damage is just mean, really.

"It is your own mother, for goodness' sake."

Whilst on conditional bail, the defendant and his partner went to a bar in Blackpool, where he accused her of looking at other men.

In anger, he assaulted her, kicking her to the floor before continuing to stamp on her head while she was on the floor.

Having entered not guilty pleas, the case went to trial, with McInerney found guilty on all counts.

Again, while on bail, the defendant committed a series of shoplifting offences on June 29, stealing various meat items from a Co-op, and 24 children's dresses from Next.

Tom Lord, offering mitigation, said his client had a long history of alcohol addiction, which he had been addressing since being in prison.

He said: "Drinking has been a part of his life for years.

"It is an entrenched battle that he has been in for a long time. He has engaged with Inspire for the first time.

"He is now dry, and he is hoping to maintain that on his release in due course."

The court heard the defendant has several previous convictions for domestic violence.

Judge Gioserano said: "If you want some indication of where the drinking has got you, look at the offence of shoplifting.

"The drinking has reduced you to stealing 24 children's dresses.

"That is what you have been reduced you. That just shows you the level you have sunk due to the drink, stealing children's clothing."

McInerney was sentenced to 15 months' imprisonment, with a restraining order against his ex-partner.
