Householders asked to do 1 thing if they spot robins in the garden - Daily Record

Robins have been called the UK's favourite bird and it's easy to see why. Not only do they control pests in the garden by munching on grubs and insects but they also bring joy to many when spotted.

Some people believe the red-breasted birds represent a connection with lost loved ones too and the saying 'loved ones appear when robins are near' is another reason they are a welcome sight. And while they can be perceived as a winter bird, they can actually be spotted in gardens all year round.

Keeping them returning to your garden is something that requires some action, however.

Increasing threats to bird habitats due to loss of living areas, higher temperatures and a drop in insect numbers are all factors that mean robins face a battle to thrive.

Gardeners are being urged to give them, and other birds, a helping hand, reports The Express. One action they can take if they see a robin in their outdoor space is crucial as it will help them to feel safe.

According to the Woodland Trust, robins are 'more likely' to spend time in your garden if they 'feel safe from predators'.

This means you need to move the position and location of your bird feeders in order to protect robins from the threat of cats, if you want them to keep returning to your garden to feed.

The Trust says: "Robins, and other birds, are more likely to spend time in your garden if they feel safe from predators like cats. Ideally, bird feeders should be positioned around 2m away from dense vegetation.

"This will reduce the chance of a surprise attack by cats, and means birds can still easily retreat to cover if needed."

Another option for robins is to considerIt nest boxes too, placed in quiet areas 'out of the reach of cats'.

It said: "Nest boxes should be placed in a quiet area of your garden out of the reach of cats. Facing the box between north and east is ideal as this will avoid exposure to the strongest sunlight and wettest winds.

"Bird feeders should be cleaned regularly to prevent the build-up of harmful bacteria.

"Nest boxes should be cleaned, with old nests removed, each autumn. Make sure birds have stopped using the box before you take any action. By following these steps you can increase the chances of attracting not just robins, but a whole host of birds to your garden too."

Peanuts and sunflower hearts and seeds are two of robins' favourite foods and leaving them out for them will also encourage them to return. They are packed full of fats allowing robins to get precious calories that will help them to bulk up before winter.

It is advised to scatter them on the ground or put them in platform feeders.
