PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WFLA) -- There was a large law enforcement presence in Charlotte County Sunday as reports from state leaders indicated that a deputy had been killed.
In a post on X, Sen. Rick Scott wrote that he had spoken with Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, and said he was "devastated" to hear of a deputy's passing.
"Ann and I are praying for his team and the deputy's family tonight," Scott said. "Please keep them in your prayers."
As of Sunday night, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office had not put out any further information on the incident besides stating in a Facebook post around 8 p.m. that deputies were working "two active scenes."
One of those scenes was near Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor. The other was at Popeyes restaurant on Kings Highway near I-75, according to NBC affiliate WBBH.
It remained unclear how the scenes were connected.
While the sheriff's office did not provide any additional details on the incident, several other state leaders weighed in on social media.
State CFO Jimmy Petronis said in a post on X, "Tragic reports out of Charlotte County tonight of an officer involved shooting. As details unfold, please keep all of our first responders in your prayers. May God Bless these heroes."
In addition, Congressman Greg Stube, who represents the district, indicated that his office was monitoring multiple shootings Sunday night, including a "potential officer-involved shooting" near the Sunseeker.
"My prayers are with all of those involved in responding. God bless our law enforcement officers," Stube wrote in a post on X.
Sheriff Prummell also posted a photo of a badge with a black band over it on Facebook Sunday evening. A black band typically represents mourning and respect for a fallen comrade.
The sheriff is expected to address the public Sunday night.
