Food hygiene rating revealed for new Indian restaurant

A new Indian restaurant has celebrated its first food hygiene rating after opening.

Bassett Spice first opened on Royal Wootton Bassett's High Street in November 2025, taking over the former Indian restaurant Chillies.

The new restaurant, which is based two doors down from St Bartholomew and All Saints' Church, has already been praised for its selection of curries and 'all you can eat' offer on Sundays and Mondays.

"Wonderful meal at the new Bassett Spice in town. Highly recommend," said fellow Bassett business owner Paul Cobb.

"Popped into Bassett Spice last night and had an absolutely fantastic meal! Chicken Tikka Dhansak was the best I've had yet," added resident Nick Warren, sharing his review.

Now, just one month after opening, Bassett Spice owners are celebrating their first food hygiene inspection.

Inspectors from the Food Standards Agency visited the High Street restaurant on December 15 and awarded the business a five star rating.

The restaurant's hygienic food handling, the cleanliness of the facilities and the management of food safety were all rated as 'good.'

Chillies Indian Cuisine, the former restaurant which operated from this site, had stood on Royal Wootton Bassett's High Street from August 2006 until 2025, and had previously struggled with food hygiene inspections.

In October 2023, the former restaurant was given a one-out-of-five rating from environmental health inspectors.

Now, Bassett Spice's five star rating marks a new beginning for the High Street site.

Bassett Spice has been described by owner Syed as a "bold taste of India in the heart of Royal Wootton Bassett."

"At Bassett Spice, we bring authentic Indian cooking to life with bold flavours and a modern touch," the restaurant's website reads.

"From rich curries to sizzling grills, every dish is crafted to share, savour, and enjoy, whether you're dining in or ordering at home."

Following the food hygiene inspection, the restaurant has now expanded its opening hours to seven days a week, offering dining options, collection and delivery.
