Mitsotakis highlights economic recovery and EU convergence at Oxford

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said Greece "essentially went bankrupt in 2010" and that decisions in 2015 "needlessly prolonged the crisis for another four years."

Speaking at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford on Greece's economic recovery and the need to converge with European Union standards, the prime minister noted that since 2019, the New Democracy government has implemented a clear plan to restore fiscal credibility, strengthen entrepreneurship, reduce bureaucracy and digitize the state. As a result, Greece now records growth rates above the European average, is reducing public debt faster than the EU average and has regained investment grade.

Mitsotakis said the goal remains full convergence with the EU, noting that Greece lost a decade in development.

He acknowledged that the cost of living is the main concern for households and emphasized that economic indicators are meaningful only if they improve citizens' daily lives. He also called for attracting skilled executives to public service to support ongoing reforms.
