Nicolas Roy becomes latest addition to Maple Leafs' growing injury list

There's not much room left in the Maple Leafs' infirmary.

Centre Nicolas Roy was the latest addition on Monday, joining an injured group that includes captain Auston Matthews, centre Scott Laughton, defencemen Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo and goaltender Anthony Stolarz.

Roy is suffering from an upper-body injury, coach Craig Berube said after practice at the Ford Performance Centre, and will not play against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

This development comes after Roy played a season-high 19 minutes 45 seconds on Saturday against the Blackhawks in Chicago, including being on the ice for the final shift of the game as the Leafs lost 3-2.

What's more, Matthews has not resumed skating, Berube said, since suffering a lower-body injury against the Boston Bruins last Tuesday.

What does the Roy injury mean for the Leafs?

They're now down three centres and will have a patchwork look against the Blues, though Laughton could return on Thursday at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Jacob Quillan was recalled from the Toronto Marlies -- he had 14 points in 14 games in the minors -- and was between Matias Maccelli and Bobby McMann at practice.

Max Domi centred Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan.

The No. 1 line and the fourth line remained intact -- John Tavares was between Nick Robertson and William Nylander, while Steven Lorentz centred Dakota Joshua and Calle Jarnkrok.

Carlo has a lower-body injury and was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 13. Berube said there is no timeline for his return.

"I get it," Berube said. "We're down a lot of guys. It's the next-man-up mentality and go play."

Defenceman Troy Stecher, claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, was at the Ford Performance Centre for practice on Monday. Stecher is wearing No. 28.
