Met Office forecasts 'reasonable chance' of snow as 'widespread wintry spell' to hit UK - Manchester Evening News

As Storm Claudia batters parts of England and Wales with torrential rain and strong winds, snow may seem unlikely - but that could be about to change.

A number of yellow and amber weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office throughout Friday (November 14), with downpours continuing into Saturday.

Storm Claudia, which was named by the Spanish meteorological service, is expected to bring severe weather conditions for much of the country. Some areas could see up to 80mm of rain, with deep floodwater causing a danger to life.

But as we move into next week, the Met Office says a marked change in the weather will be felt, warning of a "reasonable chance" of snow next week as a blast of Arctic air sweeps across the UK.

Forecasters say high pressure will dominate the weekend's weather, pushing south towards the Azores and dragging in cold northerly air. As this spreads southwards across the UK, the Met Office says temperatures will plunge and wintry conditions could set in.

Temperatures could drop to -4C in parts of Scotland in the early hours of Monday (November 17). The Met Office says this chill will then spread across the whole country, with temperatures dropping 'several degrees' below the seasonal average.

Overnight temperatures could dip to -2C in the North West of England on Tuesday, with widespread overnight temperatures between 0-2C in central England and Scotland on Wednesday.

Alongside the cold, the Met Office says there is a growing chance of sleet and snow, particularly over hills and mountains in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and possibly North Wales.

Towards the end of next week, the Met Office said a "widespread wintry spell" could reach the UK, with even southern parts of the country seeing snowfall.

The weather agency said in a blog post: "The probability of snow increases as we move through the period. While Wednesday and Thursday will see only a few wintry showers over Scottish hills, Friday's wet weather in the south could bring wintry conditions to the hills of northwest Wales.

"By Sunday and Monday, as colder air digs in, there is a reasonable chance of sleet and snow in northern Scotland, with the risk spreading further south into Northern Ireland, northern England, and North Wales by Tuesday.

"The middle and end of next week could see a more widespread wintry spell if a weather system moves south, with some models suggesting a 20% or greater chance of more than 1cm of snow even in southern parts of the country. Alongside snow, there is also a risk of ice, especially where rain falls onto cold surfaces."

The upcoming cold snap marks a dramatic change from the exceptionally mild weather that dominated much of November, when temperatures ran several degrees above average.

Early November also saw the mildest Bonfire Night on record - dropping only to 14.4C in Teddington, London, the Met Office said.

But ahead of next week, forecasters have told Brits to "prepare for a much colder and potentially wintry spell, with the risk of disruptive rain, snow, and ice in places."
