Taco John's quietly moves its headquarters to Minnesota

Taco John's move to suburban Minneapolis is complete.

The fast-food Mexican chain has quietly moved its headquarters to its new support center in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park and has shuttered its former headquarters in Cheyenne, Wyoming, according to a report from the Wyoming Tribune Eagle.

Taco John's would not comment for the story. But its press releases now are now datelined St. Louis Park and the website features that address at the bottom, rather than one in Cheyenne. The Wyoming Lottery is moving into Taco John's old headquarters.

The move has been seen coming for some time. Taco John's opened its support center there in 2022, noting that it was the chain's biggest market. The company also cited the presence of restaurant industry talent in the Twin Cities, given the presence of chains like Dairy Queen and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Many of the chain's executives were already located in Minnesota, including Heather Neary, who was named CEO of the chain last year.

Yet the company under former CEO Jim Creel insisted it would keep its headquarters in Cheyenne. The hiring of Neary appears to have changed that equation.

Minneapolis is more centrally located to the company's biggest markets, which include Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and South Dakota, according to Technomic. The chain finished 2024 with 340 locations, all but seven of which are operated by franchisees.

Taco John's is hardly the first chain to shift headquarters. Chipotle did so in 2019 following the hiring of CEO Brian Niccol, moving headquarters to Newport Beach, California, from Boulder, Colorado.

Subway opened a second headquarters in Miami, along with Milford, Connecticut, following the hiring of now-former CEO John Chidsey. Papa John's opened a second headquarters in Atlanta, in addition to Louisville, Kentucky, following the hiring of now-former CEO Rob Lynch. Dutch Bros, which had been based in Grants Pass, Oregon, is moving its headquarters to Tempe, Arizona.

New York-based Shake Shack recently opened a support center in Atlanta following the hiring there of Lynch to be CEO. And In-N-Out plans to move its headquarters to a suburb of Nashville.

A growing number of U.S. headquarters, according to the commercial real estate firm CBRE. There were 96 such moves last year. The firm cited tax policy and access to commercial markets as the top two reasons for such moves.
