AstraZeneca (NADSAQ: AZN) announced the launch of FluMist Home, a delivery service that allows eligible individuals to receive and self-administer the company's nasal spray flu vaccine at home for the first time.
The service makes FLUMIST, the only nasal spray influenza vaccine in the United States, available for home delivery to adults aged 18 to 49 years for self-administration, or for administration by parents or caregivers to individuals aged 2 to 17 years. The Food and Drug Administration approved FLUMIST for self-administration in September 2024.
Customers can order through www.FluMist.com, where they complete a medical screening questionnaire reviewed by a licensed healthcare provider to determine eligibility. Once approved and insurance is verified, the vaccine is prescribed and shipped directly to consumers with administration instructions and storage guidance.
The service operates through partnerships with ASPN Pharmacies, which reviews orders, and Polaris Pharmacy Services, which dispenses and ships the vaccines in temperature-controlled packages. Vaccines are stored in refrigerated conditions until use.
FluMist Home will be available in 34 states for the 2025-26 flu season, covering approximately 80% of the eligible population. The service is unavailable in some states due to local pharmacy laws. AstraZeneca stated it aims to expand availability to all 48 contiguous states in future seasons.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classified the 2024-2025 influenza season as high-severity across all age groups, resulting in at least 610,000 hospitalizations and 27,000 deaths. FLUMIST was originally approved by the FDA in 2003, and nearly 200 million doses have been distributed worldwide since then.
The vaccine remains available through traditional healthcare providers in doctors' offices and pharmacies nationwide.
