Mum-of-three feels 'completely failed' by council after being left homeless

A mum-of-three feels "completely failed" by the council after being left homeless and sleeping on a camp bed since being evicted from her home in September.

Kayleigh Oliver, aged 36, said she notified Wyre Forest District Council that her and her children were being evicted on September 24 from their privately rented property in Stourport.

She claims that despite the council accepting it has a duty to house the family, they have still not been found temporary accommodation, and she had no choice but to throw out all of their belongings as they had nowhere to move them.

Ms Oliver said: "It's heartbreaking. It's really affecting our physical and mental health and I don't know what else to do. We'd had problems with the property for quite a while and I'd complained to the council about the rats and blue bottle flies.

"Our eviction date was September 24, but the council accepted a relief duty on July 29 as I told them I had to move out before the eviction date as I was having an operation on September 8, so I needed somewhere to recover and couldn't empty the property.

"They still told me they couldn't help, so I had to spend my recovery on a camp bed and throw out all of our belongings. The council has failed to protect our belongings by not providing a place for us to stay."

Ms Oliver said the council delayed accepting the main housing duty until October 29, but despite this, the family are still without temporary accommodation.

The closest accommodation the family has been offered is in Stourbridge, but Ms Oliver said she would have no way of getting her children to school and tutoring in Stourport.

Wyre Forest District Council said that although it can't comment on individual cases, it makes "every reasonable effort" to provide accommodation as close to the district as possible.

The council confirmed that if it is not possible, they can prioritise households for a move back to the area within "reasonable timeframes".

Ms Oliver said: "The council told me the closest housing they could offer is in Stourbridge, but I don't drive, so I wouldn't be able to get my children to school and tutoring. I can't take public transport due to my anxiety and my GP has explained this to them.

"The council said they were struggling to find us anywhere due to the volume of families waiting for accommodation, so there is nowhere unless it is in Stourbridge. My son is 18 and he's even offered to stay with his dad or friends to see if it is easier for me and his sisters to be offered accommodation if there are less of us.

"I can't understand why we can't even be offered a room in a Travelodge or hotel near Stourport."

Ms Oliver said she just wants stability for her family and has praised Citizens Advice for their support.

She said: "My eldest daughter has autism and is dealing with so much sensory overload at the moment. My other daughter now has anxiety over what has been happening. They both have physical health issues too, but it doesn't seem to make a difference to the council. They haven't even taken it into consideration.

"We're staying with my ex-partner, the children's dad, at the moment as we have nowhere else to turn. It's been really hard on him too. We're all struggling and I'm so stressed spending every day looking for accommodation. I'm trying my best for my three children to give them the stability we all need.

"All I want is for my children to be happy and have a stable life. Citizens Advice have been really good and they've listened to all my evidence, but I feel like we've been completely failed by the council."

A spokesperson for Wyre Forest District Council said: "Unfortunately, we cannot comment on individual cases. We would encourage anyone who is facing or experiencing homelessness to contact our Housing Advice Team. The range of housing options available will depend on each person's circumstances.

"We will make offers of temporary accommodation to households that we have a duty to help. We will make every reasonable effort to provide accommodation as close to the district as possible. If this is not possible, we will do all we can to prioritise households for a move back into the area within reasonable timeframes.

"The Housing Advice Team can be contacted on 01562 732928, or for emergencies outside of office hours, please call 01562 732225. More information can be found on our website at www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/housing-and-homes/homelessness."
