Former BBC Weather presenter dies after a long-term illness as tribute paid

A BBC Weather presenter has died at the age of 56 after a long-term illness.

Jay Wynne died in June, his brother confirmed to BBC News. Matthew said: "Jay had a gift for gentle clarity, making his forecasts for sometimes complex weather systems feel accessible and engaging," his brother, Matthew, said in a tribute.

"A keen skier, golfer and musician, Jay enjoyed travelling to pursue his sporting interests. We will miss his wisdom, generosity and dry sense of humour."

Jay joined BBC Weather back in the year 2000 after studying Environmental Geography at the University of Aberdeen and a master's degree in Applied Meteorology at the University of Reading. He originally studied Civil Engineering for two years before dropping out and changing his course.

Back in 2011, Jay told Radio Times that he would stay awake until the sun rose to ensure that his reports were accurate: "I have been known to drive around after night shifts, waiting for the sun to come up."

"At night, it's difficult to tell what kind of cloud there is on satellite pictures, so I like to see if I was right. More often than not I am."

Jay also worked on a North Sea offshore oil rig as a technician for three years. He also explored a lot of South East Asia as part of his environmental research and worked as an English teacher in Fukuoka, Japan.

While training for the Met Office, Jay trained at RAF Northolt. After hearing the tragic news, fans took to social media to share their condolences.

Over on X/Twitter, one person said: "Sad to hear. Always came across as a lovely guy when presenting the weather," while another wrote: "Sleep well Sir." A third person added: "Sorry to learn this. Sad news."
