Body found in Mon County shallow grave identified as missing Morgantown woman, ruled homicide

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) -- Monongalia County officials have confirmed that the human remains found in a shallow grave last month belong to Kimberly Osborne, a woman who has been missing for seven months.

According to a release from the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office, Osborne's remains were discovered on Nov. 16 on Little Indian Creek Road and sent to the West Virginia Chief Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and identification. Osborne was last seen in May 2024 on River Road.

Osborne's identification comes after an extensive investigation including evidence obtained during the exhumation of the body, statements provided to law enforcement by individuals with knowledge of the case, as well as digital and forensic evidence. A forensic anthropology team from Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. also assisted with the investigation due to their expertise in working with outdoor homicide cases.

Officials said that the investigation is still ongoing and has been ruled a homicide. Crews with the Monongalia County Sheriff's Office were assisted by the West Virginia State Police; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office and the Monongalia County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
