12th October 2025 - (Tokyo) A major typhoon is charting a course towards Japan's Izu Islands, with meteorologists warning of potentially dangerous conditions developing early next week.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Typhoon No. 23 is currently tracking eastwards over the sea south of Shikoku. The storm system, which boasts a central pressure of 980 hectopascals and maximum winds of 30 meters per second, is forecast to approach the Izu island chain on Monday.
Residents in the affected areas are being urged to prepare for severe weather. The JMA has issued stark warnings that wind speeds could intensify to 50 meters per second around the islands, accompanied by waves reaching heights of up to 9 meters.
The agency has advised the public to exercise extreme caution against a suite of potential hazards. These include violent winds, landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, rapidly swelling rivers, and exceptionally high waves. Additionally, residents are reminded to remain alert for secondary dangers such as lightning strikes and tornado-like wind gusts.
