Exactly when weather will get 'brighter for Scotland', according to the Met Office - Daily Record

Since September started, Scots seem to have seen nothing but wind and rain, with several weather alerts and flood warnings having been put in place since the official beginning of autumn. But according to the Met Office's latest forecast, we're about to see a short break in the clouds that will let some September sun through- if only briefly.

This week has been as miserable as the last, with showers having scattered the country almost every day. And while today, Wednesday, September 17, is to be no different, we'll be glad to see some 'brighter' weather in Scotland tomorrow morning, Thursday, September 18.

Met Office Meteorologist Clare Nasir says this morning is to be 'wet for many'. She adds: "As we head through into the first part of Wednesday morning, this is the weather front moving in. You can see a deep area of low pressure tracking towards the northwest of Scotland through the day.

"And this weather front continues and returns through Thursday as well, with coastal gales towards the northwest.

"So through this morning, if you are stepping out, it's fine across Caithness, Aberdeenshire, Sutherland, a few showers for Orkney as well as Shetland.

"This rain moving in across western and southern parts of Scotland.

"The rain becomes a bit more fragmented across the Highlands as it pushes towards the northeast of Scotland through the morning and into the afternoon.

"An improving picture across northern England and southern Scotland, as this rain continues across central southern parts of England and Wales."

Thankfully, temperatures today will be milder than what we've seen recently, with highs of 19C in the Central Belt.

And despite today's showers, tomorrow morning is to see a welcome change from the autumnal weather, as Nasir continues: "Through Thursday then, some brighter weather across Scotland to start the day.

"Here's that weather front throughout the afternoon, some fine conditions across the north, although it will be windy, and also towards the south as well as central areas."

Indeed, Met Office weather maps show a drier picture for Scots on Thursday morning, but some showers will prevail in the northwest Highlands.

But while we may soon see some sunnier spells amid the seemingly constant rain, the weather expert warns that the low-pressure system will linger for the rest of the week, potentially bringing yet more rain on Friday.

Nasir adds: "So there's the picture for Thursday afternoon, that weather front, never too far away, will remain across more central areas, and then into Friday, more rain comes towards the southwest later.

"Across Scotland and Northern Ireland, mostly dry, cloud comes and goes, there could be a few showers around as well."

This ongoing spell of wintery weather follows the hottest summer since record began way back in 1884.

Scots saw surprisingly warm temperatures this year, with several areas surpassing the 32C benchmark more than once over the past few months.
