Popular North East tourist spot gets world record for its 146ft Christmas tree

The towering Wellingtonia, planted in the 19th century on the historic National Trust estate, has long been a favourite among visitors.

But this year the tree has reached new heights, quite literally, after Guinness World Records (GWR) verified its status as the tallest Christmas tree ever decorated in its natural, rooted position.

The festive transformation was no simple undertaking.

Cragside's team spent months planning how to safely illuminate the enormous tree, ultimately decorating it with 1,000 multi-coloured lights and oversized bows to create a centrepiece for the winter season.

Steve Howard, Visitor Operations Manager at Cragside, said securing the world record had been a long-held ambition: "It's been quite the year of planning. Last year, we presented the UK's Tallest Living Christmas Tree, and we kept wondering if we could go one giant leap further and secure a Guinness World Records title, and we made it!"

Mr Howard added that seeing the historic tree celebrated on a global stage has been "an incredible moment for everyone who loves Cragside".

Cragside's Giant Redwood is believed to be one of the earliest Wellingtonias planted in Britain, part of Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong's visionary landscape design.

More than 150 years later, the tree has become a seasonal icon, and now a world-beating one.

Visitors have flocked to the estate to see the illuminated giant for themselves, with the record bringing a surge of interest in Cragside's Christmas celebrations.

The achievement forms part of Guinness World Records' annual festive highlights, which this year also include Germany's Josef Kardinal extending his title for the largest collection of snow globes, now totalling 11,017.

Cragside's team says the accolade has already inspired ideas for future festive displays, but for now, the estate is savouring its moment in the spotlight beneath the glow of the world's tallest bedded Christmas tree.
