On August 12, 2024, the U.S. Department of State's Assembly of Local Leaders had a high-level briefing from the Office of China Coordination on U.S.-PRC relations. Local elected leaders raised questions about and shared experiences on their varied engagements with the PRC. Discussions also included best practices for local officials interacting with PRC counterparts or traveling to China, opportunities to use subnational engagements to advance U.S. interests, and to the importance of protecting and supporting Chinese-American and Asian American residents.
