Sumatra floods: Police send heavy equipment, open clean water access

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chief of Indonesia's National Police (Polri) Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo announced the deployment of heavy equipment and the installation of clean water facilities to expedite disaster response in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

In a statement released on Saturday, he said he had received reports from the chiefs of the Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra regional police forces, underscoring the need for heavy equipment.

"We need to accelerate emergency measures by mobilizing more heavy equipment," Prasetyo said.

Highlighting Aceh Province, he assured the public that Polri has been working to collect and update vital data on actual needs in the field following the major floods and landslides that struck in late November.

The three-star general further noted that the police had prepared between five and six units of heavy equipment -- including excavators, bulldozers, and dump trucks -- to ensure swift and effective disaster response in North Aceh and Aceh Tamiang districts.

He went on to say that Aceh Tamiang will also receive five more units to reinforce emergency measures.

"As for North Sumatra, the regional police chief has reported the deployment of around 21 units of heavy equipment that are currently operational," Prasetyo added.

In addition to mobilizing heavy equipment, he underlined Polri's commitment to assisting the government in meeting the basic needs of affected communities, with a particular focus on access to clean water.

He noted that the police plan to establish around 300 clean water facilities, of which more than 100 are already operational.

Facilities in North Aceh, Aceh Tamiang, Central Tapanuli (North Sumatra), as well as Agam and Padang Panjang (West Sumatra) will soon be inaugurated, he added.

The Polri deputy chief stressed that all the initiatives reflect the police's determination to support post-disaster recovery efforts and to ensure that all affected residents have access to basic needs.
