Rachel Dugdale announces retirement from professional and international football - The Global Herald

Rachel Dugdale, a defender who earned 43 caps for Northern Ireland, has confirmed she is retiring from both international and professional club football at the age of 28.

Dugdale's final appearance for Northern Ireland came in June when she featured in a 1-1 Nations League draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina. She first wore the Northern Ireland shirt in March 2016, making her senior debut against Slovakia during the Istria Cup.

Her bid to play at UEFA Women's Euro 2022 was halted by an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which forced her to miss the tournament.

Over the course of her club career Dugdale represented a number of teams in England and abroad. Her CV includes spells with:

Her most recent side, Blackburn Rovers Women, withdrew from the Championship in May and currently compete in the fourth tier of the English women's game.

"To the mighty GAWA, I announce my retirement from international and professional football. It is with a heavy heart but immense pride that I share this news," she said in a statement.

"Representing Northern Ireland since I was 15 has been the greatest honour of my career. Being part of the journey to our first ever major tournament was a dream come true, and I will cherish that memory forever.

"Thank you for your amazing support over the years. While it's scary to step away from the game I love, I am excited for the new chapter ahead. This team and these fans will always hold a special place in my heart."

Dugdale had become a regular selection under manager Tanya Oxtoby, who praised the defender for her influence within the squad.

"Rachel has been such an important part of the transition period over the last 18 months. Her leadership and ability to set the right standards every single day has enhanced our culture immensely and that will be hard to replace," the Australian said.

"I can't wait to see her embrace and succeed on her next journey, and we will all miss her around the group massively."

Having decided to step away from playing, Dugdale said she is looking forward to the next phase of her life while remaining grateful for the memories and support she received throughout her career.
